Helga Powell has a passion for nature and art. After gaining a BA and MA in Art History from UCL, she worked for several years in London as a picture and academic researcher. Since 2007, Helga has lived in rural North Herefordshire, a county which provides a visual delight through the seasons. Gardens and hedgerows and the flowers and birds within them are her inspiration.

Watercolour lends itself to flower painting. It has an unassuming quality yet offers an endless spectrum of representational technique from delicate detail to sumptuous, saturated colour washes. Helga's paintings offer a twist on conventional botanical illustration as flowers are represented in their natural context, in an almost photographic style.

Representing birds has become a bit of an addiction. Some of Helga's birds are loosely based on actual species, whilst others come from her avian imagination. Either way she likes to think of them as highly decorative flights of fancy!

She works on commissions from her garden studio and exhibits work in local galleries. She is a member of botanicalartists.com and the Association of Illustrators. Helga is also signed with The Art Agency, a very well established illustration agency specialising in highly accurate and imaginative non-fiction illustration for publishers and designers.
